Putting value to the cost of Discipleship

Mark 1:16-17
16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 18At once they left their nets and followed him.
19When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

In a recent interview of Christians they were asked to list their goals in life and not one said that that their goal in life was to be a committed believer of Christ and to make disciples. That surveyed included pastors and church leaders.

The way disciples are made today has been ineffective. We must make new changes that are relevant and biblical. Here are some changes:

First of all, there has to be a change from emphasis on building consensus to building character. Too often wanting to be the most sought after by the crowds has caused many to not emphasize the need of integrity and personal conviction.

Secondly, replace ministry designed to pass on knowledge to efforts intended to facilitate holistic ministry. Knowledge without the practical application and facilitation of empowering people will result in skeptical, critical, selfish and egotistical Christians.

Lastly, we need to alter people’s focus from engaging in the optimal feel-good activities to absolute commitment to personal growth, ministry and authenticity in their faith.

The things that got us here will not be adequate to take us where we need to go. Qualitative growth will require constant upgrading and intensifying our efforts. Doing more what you’ve been doing won’t go well either.

New days will require new ways!
